Last Wednesday A-level art and photography students went to the Art in Action talk, London  where we listened to four well known artists working in different areas of the creative industry. We heard from the ceramicist Kate Malone, who talked about the different areas of her job, from her private commission work to working on projects with the local community and in schools.

Piers Atkinson talked about his work in the fashion industry, what inspires him and how he created his career to be able to do what he wanted to be doing. The abstract painter Fiona Rae talked through her painting journey from when she left art school to the present, her processes and her studio. It was inspiring to hear an artist talk about their art, and interesting to hear her explain her abstract paintings and the reason behind them.

The photographer Simon Roberts discussed how winning a photography competition led to his career, working with magazines, then to travelling around Russia taking photos for his book and being the election artist in 2010.

Hearing the artists reveal their day to day life in creative roles brought to life the huge variety of different opportunities and pathways in the creative industry.
