Throughout the reception year, the teachers build a profile of the children through observations during child initiated learning. At the end of the reception year the teachers make a teacher assessment against the profile deciding if each child is emerging, expected or exceeding level to the Early Learning Goals (ELG).

If the children achieve the ELG in all the prime areas: communication and language, personal social and emotional development, physical development as well as the specific areas: literacy and maths, they achieve a Good Level of Development (GLD).
