EYFS Results

Throughout the reception year, the teachers build a profile of the children through observations during child initiated learning. At the end of the reception year the teachers make a teacher assessment against the profile deciding if each child is emerging, expected or exceeding level to the Early Learning Goals (ELG).

If the children achieve the ELG in all the prime areas: communication and language, personal social and emotional development, physical development as well as the specific areas: literacy and maths, they achieve a Good Level of Development (GLD).

Phonics Results

At the end of Year 1, the students will undertake a Phonics Screening Check. This check is administered by the class teacher and is designed to confirm whether your child has learnt phonics decoding to an age appropriate level. It will identify students who need additional help to improve their decoding skill. The check consists of 20 real word and 20 words that are pseudo- words (we call these alien words) that your child will read aloud to the teacher.

For those children who do not pass in Year one, they will retake in Year two.

KS1 Results

At the end of Year 2 (end of KS1) teachers are expected to judge the standards your child is working at in English, maths and science, by the end of key stage 1. To help inform those judgements, pupils sit national curriculum tests in English and maths, commonly called SATs. At Simon Balle, children also sit an English grammar, punctuation and spelling. The tests are a tool for teachers to help them measure your child’s performance and identify their needs as they move into key stage 2. They also allow teachers to see how your child is performing against national expected standards. The tests can be taken any time during May and they are not strictly timed. Pupils may not even know they are taking them as many teachers will incorporate them into everyday classroom activities.
