Professor Louise Archer, from UCL, visited our year 13 Sociology class to present a seminar on her research and findings from her study ‘People like us- we’re Nike’. She explained her work exploring educational inequalities, including how Bourdieu provides a useful framework, and we debated what shapes young people’s educational choices.
The points highlighted during the seminar have been very useful for our ‘Explaining and Understanding Social Inequalities’ topic in Sociology. The presentation was informative and the discussion points were very engaging. It was very interesting to see what the participants involved in the study really thought about the way their education was influenced. All of our class learnt something new to add to their notes and perhaps use in an upcoming essay!
