Sixth Form Enrichment at Simon Balle All-through School

At Sixth Form, we believe that education is about more than what happens in the classroom. Our Year 12 enrichment programme is designed to help students develop as well-rounded individuals, giving them opportunities to explore new interests, develop valuable skills and gain experiences that complement their academic studies.

Enrichment encourages students to step outside their usual subjects and comfort zones, developing skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, organisation, problem-solving and confidence. It also provides opportunities to explore potential careers, contribute to the wider community and develop interests that can support students in their future studies, applications and employment.

Our Year 12 Enrichment Offer

Our enrichment programme changes and develops from year to year, allowing us to respond to student interests and provide a varied range of opportunities. This year's Year 12 students can choose from a wide range of activities, including:

INFORM Sessions
Every Thursday, Year 12 students take part in our INFORM sessions, which provide practical guidance and information to support them throughout Sixth Form and beyond. Sessions cover a wide range of topics, including post-16 wellbeing, safe driving, interview skills, work experience, CVs and cover letters, supercurricular activities and planning for next steps. INFORM helps students develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills they need to make informed decisions about their future.

Larch Outreach
Students have the opportunity to support pupils at The Larch, our primary school, across a variety of lessons including Maths, English, PE and many more. Students can also support younger pupils with their reading. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop communication, patience, leadership and teamwork skills, while making a positive contribution to the learning of younger students.

Teachers of Tomorrow
For students considering a career in teaching, Teachers of Tomorrow provides the opportunity to gain experience within secondary school classrooms. Students can support lessons in an area that interests them, helping them to develop communication, organisation, leadership and interpersonal skills, while gaining valuable insight into the teaching profession.

Model United Nations (Model UN)
Students take part in Model UN, developing their understanding of international issues while representing countries and debating a range of topics. We enter the nationwide Model UN competition held at Haileybury School. Students develop confidence, public speaking, research, negotiation, teamwork and persuasive communication skills.

Mock Law Trial
Students interested in a career in law can explore the different roles involved in the legal system, including barristers, witnesses, jurors, clerks and ushers. They prepare both prosecution and defence cases for a series of mock trials before representing the school in the Young Citizens Mock Law Trial competition in December, competing against students from other schools. The programme develops advocacy, public speaking, critical thinking, research, teamwork and the ability to construct and present an argument.

Business Enterprise
Students have the opportunity to set up and run their own business, taking an idea from the initial business plan through to selling their products or services at the Christmas Fête. Students develop practical skills in areas such as entrepreneurship, marketing, branding, budgeting, teamwork, communication and problem-solving, while gaining an insight into what it takes to run a successful business.

Language Café
The Language Café is designed for students who are not studying a language at A Level but would like to maintain and develop the language skills they gained at GCSE. It provides an informal opportunity to practise languages, build confidence and continue to appreciate the benefits of language learning.

Health & Fitness
Students can visit Hartham Leisure Centre and make use of the gym as part of their enrichment. This provides an opportunity to develop an understanding of the importance of physical health, fitness and wellbeing, while encouraging students to develop positive habits that can support their wider health and lifestyle.

Personal Finance (OCR)
Students can work towards an OCR Personal Finance qualification, developing an understanding of important financial topics and the skills needed to manage money effectively. The qualification helps students prepare for financial independence and has a value of 8 UCAS points.

Senior Sport
Senior Sport gives students the opportunity to stay active and play sport during their enrichment time in the Elm Sports Centre. Activities include badminton, indoor football and basketball, providing opportunities to develop fitness, teamwork and communication while enjoying sport with other students.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
The EPQ gives students the opportunity to undertake an independent project on a topic of their choice. Most students complete a 5,000-word extended essay, although other project formats are also possible. Students develop valuable skills in independent research, project management, academic writing, referencing and critical thinking. The EPQ can also be a valuable addition to university and apprenticeship applications, demonstrating a student's ability to work independently and pursue an area of genuine interest in greater depth.

Developing Skills for the Future

Whatever students choose, our enrichment programme gives them the opportunity to develop skills and experiences that extend beyond their academic qualifications. Whether they are working with younger pupils, developing a business, competing in a national competition, exploring a future career or simply pursuing an interest, enrichment is an important part of the wider Sixth Form experience.

Our enrichment offer is reviewed each year and may change to reflect student interests, opportunities and the wider needs of our Sixth Form community.
