Music Scholars are at the pinnacle of their musical career at Simon Balle.
They set the standard. They inspire. They work to achieve their very best with hard work, excellence and total commitment.
More than just technical proficiency, Music Scholars must show a deep passion for and dedication to music at Simon Balle.

Music Scholarships are a unique way of supporting our best musicians. They are a partnership. They are commitment. They are musical excellence.
- Musicians must be at least Grade 6 standard and be in the 6th Form by the start of the Scholarship.
- There is an application process, including audition and personal statement outlining musicianship and commitment. There will then be an interview with the Director of Music.
- Students will commit to practice (at least 40 minutes per day, five times per week), weekly ensemble participation, an expected level of sight reading and an expectation for progression. Instrumental or singing lessons should be taken in school.
- Be part of our early morning practice (EMP) - the best way to build in quality practice.
- Scholars can be learning any instrument and any musical pathway. However, they have to commit and play a full part in the life of Team Music.
In return, we will provide:
- High quality teaching and enrichment, led by the Director of Music
- Twice yearly reviews with the Director of Music
- Friday enrichment, for practice, musical collaboration and performance (as long as you do not take enrichment that clashes)
- Masterclasses and experiences
- Piano accompaniment sessions
- An annual music scholars recital evening
- Bespoke guidance and support for Conservatoire applications and auditions
- An individual pathway with your Simon Balle instrumental lessons that could include a discount for a term or longer lessons
The application process
We ask that you complete the application form that is available via the 6th form application process. You will be invited for an audition and Interview in February / March. New applicants will also be invited to join a rehearsal and performance to experience our music live.
In the audition, you will be asked to perform one piece that is at or near the required standard. The interview will ask about your musical experiences and aims, reasons for wanting to be a Simon Balle Music Scholar and how you will commit to all that is Simon Balle Music. It is for you to get to know us as us to know you, whether you are a new applicant or already at Simon Balle.
