To be part of the Simon Balle Big Band, you have to be committed to other ensembles and performances. Big Band is not the only ensemble or choir you will be in.
You have to be able to read treble or bass clef notation, fluently
You should be at least Grade 4 standard and able to play in different styles, including swing
Sight reading should be something you are competent in.
You have to commit - to the ethos, the expectations and practice across all your music.

Entry is also via Big Band II (BBII) where you learn how to be in a Big Band and learn different styles. Some instruments will get in quicker than others. This is the nature of a Big Band.

Making music with others is part of Team Music. If you learn an instrument you should be in an ensemble. We do expect you to be at rehearsals every week. If you have a regular clash, you speak to the music office team and come every two weeks for a short period of time.

Early Morning Practice (EMP) is just that, time to practice before the school day starts. Available in the Simon Balle Music Centre.
All musicians can be using this to ensure they progress and get better, consistently. We are all busy and this is a superb way to put in practice without it taking up too much of the day. Just getting up earlier!
Advanced musicians should be using this as their routine. Technical work, scales, stamina, maturity. For those taking Grade 8 or a diploma, this is expected.
7.50am until 8.35am. 45 minutes. Quality time.
Musicians should come prepared with music, knowing what they have to do. Booking is important so we have a room ready.

These opportunities are bespoke, but include:
Masterclasses
Accompanist sessions for classical musicians
Solo opportunities with ensembles
Opportunities to work within their musical interest and pathway at a high level of musicianship
